€1.1Million worth of Cannabis seized in Co. Kildare yesterday represents just 0.003% of the Cannabis that has been sold in Ireland already this year

55 Kilos of Cannabis were seized yesterday in Co. Kildare by Gardaí during an operation said to be targeting organised crime. A 43 year old man was arrested at the scene and Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.

This may sound like a significant seizure of Cannabis by Gardaí but when compared to the Cannabis already sold in Ireland since the start of this year it represents a mere 0.003% .

This was based of the figure of €309,000,000 taken from the article which shows €48 worth of cannabis is sold on the black-market every second in Ireland .

That post also shows that we have spent over €49million so far this year enforcing this failed war on drugs.

So while the Gardaí celebrate this seizure of Cannabis as some sort of victory keep in mind the significance of what was seized and that it’s cost the state over €350million in less than 3 months.

The video below is a great one to save a link to so you can post it below stories of seizures like this online.

Lets hope sometime soon a serious conversation will be had in Ireland around the need to end Cannabis prohibition, the immediate release of cannabis prisoners, the expungement of any criminal records relating to cannabis and finally how to regulate the production and supply of Cannabis to adults here in Ireland. Other European countries are already miles ahead in the conversation with Malta opening applications for Cannabis social clubs and Germany soon to publish a bill that would legalise the sale of Cannabis to adults.

Don’t forget that you can do your part too to help this conversation be had by emailing your local TD which has been made incredibly easy with this tool from Crainn and Uplift. They have a template included to help with your email and please do share any responses you get with the people over on Crainn or with myself here on Martins World.
